RENUNCIATION OF INDIAN CITIZENSHIP


 

SURRENDER CERTIFICATE

     
   

Indian citizens acquiring foreign citizenship are required to renounce their Indian citizenship and surrender their Indian passports for cancellation. They are issued a Surrender Certificate by the Embassy.

 

On or before 31 May 2010, the fee applicable for renunciation of Indian citizenship and obtaining a surrender certificate was US $175.  Penalties were also applicable in certain cases.  However, with effect from 1 June 2010, the Government of India has made a relaxation in regard to cases to be processed in future.

 

Applicants may note the following:

 

  • The Persons of Indian Origin who acquired foreign citizenship on or before 31 May 2010 should approach the Embassy for cancellation of their passports and to obtain Surrender Certificates. They will have to pay US $20 for this service. This relaxation will not cover applications processed before 1 June 2010.

  • Indian Citizens acquiring foreign citizenship on or after 1 June 2010 will have to pay the renunciation fee of US $175 per person. Penalties would be applicable in case such passports are not surrendered within 90 days of acquiring foreign citizenship.

  • Those applicants who apply for renunciation of Indian Citizenship, and submit their Indian passports for cancellation, will be issued a Surrender Certificate.

  • Those applicants who apply for renunciation of Indian Citizenship, and are unable to submit their Indian passports for cancellation, will be issued an Acknowledgement Certificate.

  • If Indian passport is available, applicants are required to complete and submit in duplicate FORM-SURRENDER.

  • If Indian passport is not available, applicants are required to complete and submit in duplicate FORM-ACKNOWLEDGE.

 

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

  1. Form in duplicate: FORM-SURRENDER or FORM-ACKNOWLEDGE.

  2. Original Indian passport:

     

    1. Photocopy of first 5 and last 2 pages of Indian passport.

    2. In case the applicants do not have the Indian passports in their possession for any reason (loss/misplacement/submission to foreign government long time back, etc.), they are required to furnish duly notarized affidavit in this regard. Certified copies of official documents submitted to foreign authority at the time of obtaining foreign citizenship/naturalization should be submitted.

    3. If the Indian passport is still valid but has been misplaced/lost, then Police Report should be submitted additionally.

     

  3. Foreign Naturalization Certificate (copy) or any valid and acceptable proof towards their acquiring foreign citizenship.

  4. Foreign passport (copy).

  5. Fee of US $20/- may be paid by bank draft drawn in favour of the EMBASSY OF INDIA, CARACAS.  Fee in Venezuelan Bolivar (Bs.F 100) may be deposited directly into the Embassy of India account with Banco Provincial.

  6. For those who acquire foreign citizenship on or after 1 June 2010, the applicable fee is US $175 (Bs.F 875).  Due penalty will also be payable where applicable.

  7. Return courier may be included if delivery of documents is requested by mail.

MODE OF APPLYING 

 

Applicants may bring their documents to the Embassy between 0900-1200 hours on working day or send them by mail.  The envelope for mailing cases may be mailed to Consular Section, Embassy of India, Quinta Tagore, No.12, Avenida San Carlos, La Floresta, Caracas, Venezuela.

 

PROCESSING TIME 

 

Applications, complete in all respects, may require a processing time of up to 2 working days.
